I want to talk about your first class. Entering a new club where everyone treats your equipment with a slight lack of interest could be the equivalent of that. No one is criticizing the fashion here, so calm down. Come dressed casually, perhaps in those surprisingly toasty pajama pants you’ve always loved.
Choose Vinyasa or Hatha to begin. Think of Hatha as a stroll in a park, and Vinyasa as more of a rhythmic dance party. Don’t worry about the positions, either literally or figuratively. It’s perfectly acceptable for your Downward Dog to initially appear to be a reluctant groundhog.
“Breathe in, breathe out.” This little act can turn into a complex dance. However, your breath is your trustworthy compass, pulling you back when your mind starts making tomorrow’s to-do list in class.
Select a floor-fitting yoga mat rather than one that suits your knees. You don’t have to give up wealth. Be careful around people who are yelling “rubber disaster.”
Let’s also avoid becoming too serious. Yoga is a practice, not a Cirque de Soleil pre-audition. It is not necessary to know the Sanskrit term for every position. Laughing off a Tree Pose wobble is the most crucial. Balance is something that takes time to develop; Rome wasn’t either.
Averse? Try taking online classes. A curious puppy who wants to know why you are mimicking its stretches, you, and your mat. Soon, you’ll be able to say “Namaste” with the precision of an experienced professional.
What’s the point of continuing? Advantages creep up on you like sunlight through the clouds. As one becomes more flexible, tension starts to fall into second place. It will appear that some lessons will be easy, while others will be difficult. Just relish the journey and cherish every discovery.
